Five months in Berlin are over and I have left the city. The last weeks have been really nice. Summer definitely is the best season to be in Berlin!

Some last impressions…

Today I realised that halftime in Berlin has already passed for me. I’ve been here for almost three months now, but it feels like it’s only been yesterday that I arrived here with ice and snow making it almost impossible for me to explore the city. And in about two months it will be bye bye Berlin!

Luckily, ice and snow are gone and thanks to that Icelandic Volcano with the unpronouncable name I’m enjoying spring concerts by birds that are not drowned out by aircraft bluster. Some trees have leaves and blossoms already.

I have been desperately trying to upload recent pictures of the city and some other adventures, but my slow internet connection just won’t let me! But they will be online asap, so stay tuned!

PS: If I can’t show you any pictures, I would at least like to show you a great song about Germany that contains a lot of pictures of Berlin, check it out!

Spring is here!

Yesterday and today we’ve had the first real spring days. It was almost 20 degrees warm and there were hardly any clouds on the sky. Also, the birds are singing and you can smell this fresh spring air (just ignore the exhaust fumes produced by cars or move away far enough from the busy streets).

As if by magic, people (including me) were pulled outside to enjoy this beautiful spring day! I decided to continue reading a book for university outside and cycled to a lake called Schäfersee. A few posts below this one you can find pictures of the Schäfersee when there was still ice and snow. It looks totally different now!

Unfortunately they forecast rain for the weekend, but hey, this was a very good start!

The Berlin Friendliness

They say that the Berlin people are unfriendly. Of course not every single person is Berlin is that way, but I already collected some experiences and I see that this stereotype doesn’t exist for no reason.

Today I called a company and told them I was interested in their services. I asked them to send a price list and the answer was (in Berlin dialect): “Price list? I can’t send that. We have the prices in our shop window, if you want to know them come and write them down. And we already have enough customers.” Oookay, right! :D

Berlin Film Festival starts!

Yesterday (11 February) the 60th edition of the Berlin Film Festival (“Berlinale”) started.

From the official Berlinale homepage:

From February 12 to 15, 2010, a unique art installation entitled “The Curtain” will tell of the magic and power of the cinema: renowned artist and international Korean-American designer Christina Kim (‘dosa’) will create a 300–square-metre symbolic movie-theatre curtain from recycled film and Berlinale billboards, DVDs, and other film-related materials. After the opening ceremony on February 12, the world premiere of the restored original version of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis will be transmitted live to the public from the Friedrichstadtpalast to a screen at the Brandenburg Gate. The public is invited to enjoy this significant moment in the history of film – free of charge – at this very special setting.
